Smartphone Experiment

Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 26, 2026

This privacy policy is a draft and has not yet been legally reviewed. Please have it checked by legal counsel before going live.

1. Data Controller

Smarter Start ab 14 e.V. Baron-Voght-Straße 73C 22609 Hamburg Germany Contact: info@smarterstartab14.de (Controller assignment still to be confirmed: named here based on the indication that Smarter Start should act as the operator. Address and contact are taken from Smarter Start's public Impressum — their own privacy page elsewhere lists a different address (Witts Allee 27, 22587 Hamburg) and a partly different board. Please clarify both with Smarter Start before this policy goes live.)

2. What Data We Collect

When you create an account: • First and last name • Email address • Password (stored encrypted — we don't have access to the plain-text password) When you register for the 2027 Smartphone Experiment: • Role (student, teacher, private individual, company/organization) • Name and email address • Location data for your school or location (see section 3) • for teachers, optionally: estimated number of students Automatically when you visit the site: • Cookie preferences (see section 7) • after your consent: usage statistics via Google Analytics

3. Location Data in Detail

When registering, you pick a school or location from an address search, or place a pin manually on a map. We collect and store: • the name of the school/location • the address • the GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude) of that place Important: this is the location of the school or place you selected — not your own, current GPS location. The site never requests your device's live location. The address search and map display use OpenStreetMap data: search input is sent to the Photon geocoding service (run by komoot GmbH), and map tiles are loaded directly from OpenStreetMap servers. Neither uses Google services or an API key; komoot's and the OpenStreetMap Foundation's own privacy policies also apply. We use location data to: • show registrations on a map (for admins, without names/emails) • count how many participants come from the same school For the "private individual" role, providing a location is optional.

4. Purpose of Processing

We process this data to enable your registration for the 2027 Smartphone Experiment, to send you related information, to show the progress of the initiative (e.g. number of participating schools), and to provide you with a personal account and status overview.

5. Legal Basis

Processing is based on your consent given by registering (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You can withdraw this consent at any time, for example by deleting your account.

6. Disclosure to Third Parties

Your data is never sold. It is processed by: • Supabase (database and account hosting, EU server location) • komoot GmbH / Photon (geocoding for the address search) and OpenStreetMap (map tiles) • Google Analytics (only after your consent in the cookie banner) • Resend (sending emails/newsletters, if you sign up for that) • Vercel (website hosting) Project admins see registration data (name, email, school) in the admin dashboard in order to organize the initiative.

7. Cookies

We use technically necessary cookies (e.g. for login and language preference) as well as, after your consent in the cookie banner, cookies for Google Analytics. You can change your choice at any time via the cookie banner.

8. Retention and Deletion

We store your data for as long as your account exists, or as long as necessary to run the Smartphone Experiment. You can permanently delete your account and registration data yourself at any time via Settings on the "For me" page.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, delete, and restrict the processing of your data, as well as the right to data portability and objection. Contact the address listed in section 1 to exercise these rights. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

10. Minor Participants

The Smartphone Experiment is aimed in part at students, some of whom are minors. For participants under 16, we recommend registering together with a parent/guardian or through the teacher/school.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy if the website or legal requirements change. The current version is always available on this page.
